At Pembroke Primary School, our Mathematics program follows the Victorian Mathematics Curriculum and supports students to develop strong mathematical knowledge, skills and confidence.
 

Learning covers the six strands of Mathematics: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. These areas are not taught in isolation; mathematical concepts are intertwined and connected, helping students recognise relationships between ideas and apply their learning across different areas of Mathematics.
 

Through explicit teaching, daily review, problem-solving and hands-on learning experiences, students develop the four mathematical proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. These proficiencies help students not only learn mathematical skills, but also understand why they work, explain their thinking, make connections and confidently apply their knowledge in new and everyday situations.
 

Teachers use ongoing assessment to identify each student’s strengths and learning needs. This allows learning to be targeted at each student’s point of need, while regularly revisiting and building on key concepts to strengthen understanding and support continued progress.
